PROFILE

College of Nursing Professor and UCF Pegasus Professor Mary Lou Sole is an expert in the area of critical care nursing, airway management and mechanical ventilation, and infection prevention in acute care. She is the lead investigator on a National Institutes of Health nursing research grant related to airway management in critically ill patients.

She is a clinical nurse specialist and clinical research scientist at Orlando Health. At Orlando Health, she is the co-investigator of a study looking at outcomes data and the implementation of the clinical nurse leader role.

With more than 30 years of nursing and classroom experience, Dr. Sole is frequently an invited speaker at national and international conferences. She is also the author of the nationally utilized nursing text “Introduction to Critical Care Nursing,” currently in its fifth edition.

At UCF, Dr. Sole has been influential in the establishment of the master’s and doctoral programs in the College of Nursing. Today, she coordinates the Clinical Nurse Leader and Clinical Nurse Specialist master's tracks.

In 2006, her expertise and commitment earned her a gubernatorial nomination to the Florida Biomedical Research Advisory Council, where she continues to serve today. She's a distinguished fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, an elite honor held by only about 1,500 nursing leaders. She is also a distinguished fellow in the American College of Critical Care Medicine, an interdisciplinary organization with less than 60 nurse fellows.

Dr. Sole is on the editorial boards for American Journal of Critical Care, Heart & Lung, AACN Advanced Critical Care and Nursing Consult. She is also a past president of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses of Metro Orlando and continues to teach and conduct research in acute care.
